‘Powerless’ councillors in Mardan announce to stage sit-in outside Imran Khan’s house
MARDAN, 15 October: The councillors elected in the local government elections in Mardan have announced to stage sit-in in front of the residence of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Iman Khan at Bani Gala, Islamabad if they did not get powers promised to them.
The councillors association members staged a protest demonstration over the issue in Mardan on Friday. The protesters carrying banners and placards chanted slogans against the government. The protesting councillors said they have not been given any powers two years after election of local government representatives.
“The government had promised that the local bodies representatives will get powers but we are still waiting for these powers,” a protester said.
“We have also been elected like nazims. We will go to Bani Gala on 20 October to get our rights,” another councillor said.
They said Imran Khan had promised to resolve the issue but nothing has been done in the last eight months.
