Polling continues in NA-120 by-election
PESHAWAR, 17 September: Voting in the by-election on the vacant National Assembly seat NA-120, Lahore commenced at 8:00am on Sunday.
The seat fell vacant after disqualification of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif by the Supreme Court of Pakistan in the Panama Papers case. Tough contest is expected between Kulsoom Nawaz, wife of Nawaz Sharif, and Yasmeen Rashid of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). A total of 44 candidates, including 32 independent candidates, are in the field in the by-election.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) said polling will continue till 5:00pm without any break. About 7,000 security personnel including Army men have been deployed inside and outside the polling stations to ensure law and order. All the 220 polling stations in the constituency have been declared sensitive.
There are over 321,000 registered voters in the constituency. Biometric voting machines have also been installed at 39 polling stations for voting on experimental basis.
