Geo-banned

PESHAWAR, June 6: The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has suspended the licence of Geo television network for 15 days and also fined the TV 1 billion rupees on charges of maligning a state organisation.

This was decided at a meeting of the PEMRA representatives, with chairman Pervez Rathor in the chair. It was also notified after the meeting that the Geo licence might remain suspended for more days if the Geo TV did not submit the fine.

Following attack on Geo News anchor Hamid Mir, the television blamed Pakistan’s top intelligence agency. At this, the Ministry of Defense wrote a letter to PEMRA to take action against the TV.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has also stopped releasing advertisements to the print organisations of the Geo TV, ie Urdu daily Jang and English daily The News International. Officials of the provincial Information Department said on condition of anonymity that the ads had been stopped on directives of leadership of the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf that rules the province.
